Lamma, praised for beautiful verdant hills and impressive bays, is the third largest of the outlying islands. The main occupation of people residing here is fishing. A regular ferry carries the passengers to Lamma, but by and large, Lamma has remained under covers. And it has been a blessing for Lamma. For its tranquility is loved by the people who come here to pass their vacations. The islands are also known for delicious seafood.
Lantau, largest among the outlying islands, is known for tourist attractions like Hong Kong Disneyland, Tian Tan Buddha and Tung Chung Fort. Hong Kong Disneyland, developed with the massive investment of US$1.8 billion, includes a Disney theme park, two hotels and retail, dining and entertainment facilities. Disneyland even has its own rail network.
Tian Tan Buddha or 'Giant Buddha' is a 85-foot-high bronze Buddha idol, highly regarded by the followers of the faith. In addition to it, there are several monastery buildings. Tung Chung Fort is one of the historical forts built in 1817. The fort has some old cannons and the enclosures are made of granite.
Cheung Chau has embraced 'Old China' way of living. The inhabitants collectively celebrate Bun Festival, which is held to exorcise wandering ghosts. Main occupation on the island is fishing. Pak Nai Temple, one of the oldest temples in Hong Kong, is a 'must do'. Kwan Kung Chung Yi Ting, built in 1973, is a traditional temple dedicated to Kwan Tai, the god of justice.
